2013 NBA Draft - Anthony Bennett Secures 1st Pick June 28, 2013 12:23
The 2013 NBA Draft was set to be a pretty unremarkable affair, mostly because the line-up was said to be bog standard, with no stand out stars.
Even with that being the case, there was a set group of players who were thought to be set for the first pick, which was held by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The draft being the draft though, things didn't go down as expected at all. For starters the Cleveland Cavaliers picked Anthony Bennett 1st. We don't know who was more shocked, the audience, or Bennett himself.
After his selection, he spoke to Shane Battier, and said; "I'm speechless right now, I don't even know what to say."
Draft analysis had him down for 8th pick at best. That being said, Draft analysis had Alex Len and Nerlens Noel fighting it out for the top spot. On the night, Len was picked 5th by the Phoenix Suns and Noel was selected 6th by the New Orleans Pelicans, which would have seen him join forces with fellow former-Kentucky college player Anthony Davis, but it was quickly announced that he would be sent to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Jrue Holiday.
It was nice to see C.J. McCollum drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers. Pre-draft talk had allied McCollum with Damian Lillard. They're similar in terms of background and they way that they've brought themselves to the table for the NBA, and Lillard would be a great model for McCollum to follow in his first year in the league.
The Zeller family also adds a new member to the NBA, with little brother, Cody Zeller, being drafted 4th by the Charlotte Bobcats. He now joins his big brothers Tyler Zeller (Cavs) and Luke Zeller (Suns) in the league.
The draft was a little weak this year, with lots of players being considered 'projects' so next season is going to be interesting to see who pulls through and becomes a solid player in the NBA.
